Concord Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program
About the Scholarship Program | Tribute to Deceased Members | Download Application The Concord Rotary Club will award a $1,000 scholarship to a Concord High School graduating senior who is planning to attend an accredited two or four year college or vocational/technical school. The applicants must have the following qualities:
Applicants should complete the application and return it to Student Services by: Friday, May 6, 2011 About the Scholarship ProgramPurpose: To provide an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a Concord High School Senior. The scholarship is to be used for first year college, university or vocational/technical school expenses and is not renewable. History: The Concord Rotary Memorial Scholarship was started 1990 in memory of deceased Concord Rotarian, Ancel Whittle. It was named The Concord Rotary Ancel Whittle Scholarship. The name of the scholarship was changed to The Concord Rotary Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory and contribution of all deceased Concord Rotarians, including J. Artley Leatherman, Don Rock, Bart Corsentino, Bill Reed and Larry "Jake" Jackowiak. These Concord Rotarians touched the lives of all they came in contact with in a very positive way. They possessed exemplary qualities that The Concord Rotary Club desires to honor and perpetuate through the awarding of annual scholarships. The Concord Rotary Club believes the deceased club members exemplified the following: Dependability, Leadership, Service to Family, Profession, Community and Church, Determination and Persistence in Reaching their Goals, Excellent Communicators, Well Respected, Maintained Positive Outlooks, Outgoing and Friendly. The Concord Rotary Club will award an annual scholarship to a Concord High School Senior who demonstrates similar qualities as stated above at home, school and in the community. Ideals: To award an annual scholarship to a Concord High School Senior. The recipient of the scholarship must demonstrate similar qualities of The Concord Rotary Club deceased members and be accepted at a two or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school. In the event the selected student fails to enroll at a college, university or trade school, the Chairman of Concord Rotary Club’s Community Service Committee will transfer the award to the second student selected by the awards committee. The Concord High School Student Services Department will notify seniors of the Concord Rotary web site where they can secure the application packet and scholarship application. The Concord Rotary Scholarship Committee will select a senior to receive the scholarship. The selection will be made after The Concord Rotary Scholarship Committee reviews the applications and conducts a face to face interview with each applicant. Requirements: A written copy of the tribute will be available to each applicant via the Concord Rotary web site. Senior applicants will present an application secured from the wed site and a recent photo to the Student Services Department no later than Friday, May 6th. The Concord Rotary Club will issue a check to the winner for the $1,000 award no later than August 15 of each year. The check will be made out to the college, university or vocational/technical school the award recipient will be attending. Tribute to Deceased MembersSix members who maintained membership in the Concord Rotary Club have died. The deceased members are Ancel Whittle, Bart Corsentino, Don Rock, J. Artley Leatherman, Bill Reed and Larry "Jake" Jackowiak. Ansel Whittle was a local resident. He worked his way up to VP of Administration with the Goshen Rubber Company. Ansel was dedicated to tasks that confronted him. He loved people, participated in his church and community. He was a loving husband and father. Bart Corsentino was a physician. Born in New York State and practiced medicine for many years. He was a caring inspirational person to his fellow Concord Rotarians. At a old age he participated and contributed to many of the community service projects conducted by The Concord Rotary Club. Don Rock was a local resident. Don was a public servant and served years as Elkhart County Surveyor. Don was cheerful, outgoing, and responsible as he served his Rotary Club. In ill health Don attended meetings and participated in club projects. He was a loving husband and father. Don’s wife continues to build on his legacy as a contributor to the Scholarship Fund. J. Artley Leatherman died April of 2008. J. spent 65 years in the Methodist ministry. He was called to the ministry as a student pastor at age nineteen. He served in foreign missions, held leadership positions in the church and community boards. He was known as the "gentle giant". He was a loving husband and father. He had a love for farming and the outdoors and will be remembered as the "apple orchard" farmer. Bill Reed died April of 2009. He was a successful entrepreneur designing & manufacturing mirrors for the transportation industry. The corporation he founded successfully operates today. He served as our club president during the 92-93 Rotary year. He was a generous supporter of The Rotary Foundation. Bill was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather. Larry "Jake" Jackowiak died September of 2009. He was a successful school administrator serving last as Concord School Districts Business Manager. Prior to this position Larry served as a teacher, coach and athletic director. He served in the Baugo and Concord School System. He served the Concord Rotary Club in many important capacities. Larry was a Past President of the Concord Rotary Club. Larry was loved and respected by students and fellow Concord Rotary Club members. All six deceased members touched the lives of those they came in contact with. Each exemplified the positive traits listed below,
The Concord Rotary Club believes awarding annual scholarships to Concord High School Seniors is a fitting memorial to these deceased members who took a strong interest in youth in so many positive ways. |
